Equal Credit Opportunity Act
The Federal "Equal Credit Opportunity Act" was originally enacted in 1974 and has been amended several times to include even more stringent regulations. The current law prohibits discrimination of any credit applicant on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, marital status, age (providing the applicant has the ability to legally enter into a binding contract), if any portion of the applicants income is from any form of public assistance, or if the applicant has exercised any right under the Consumer Credit Protection Act.
