The Fair Housing Act

The Fair Housing Act was enacted by The Congress of The United States in 1968. The sole purpose of this law is to prohibit discrimination in housing for any of the following reasons:

  • Race or Color
  • Religion
  • Sex
  • National Origin
  • Familial Status
  • Disability

The Fair Housing Act is enforceable on any provider in the housing industry including landlords, real estate companies, lending institutions, insurance companies or any direct provider in the housing industry. As it pertains to the mortgage industry, The Fair Housing Act, is very explicit in prohibiting discrimination against applicants in the areas of interest rates or the duration or conditions of a loan.

For anyone who feels that their rights may have been violated you must file a complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development within one year of the alleged violation.
